I’ve been using the truck to haul firewood off our new land, up a seriously steep logging road, through some mud, over a “road” that’s just the least worst part of a log yard. The truck is totally in its element, and loving it. I wouldn’t do this to it every day, but this is basically what I picture in my daydreams about owning a classic 4wd truck. This is putting what is arguably an expensive toy, to its full potential of practical use; partial justification of its big A/T tires. A small tractor wouldn’t be better for this because you’d need a trailer to haul as many logs as this can in one trip . It’s perfect, and I think if the road was 5% steeper or rougher it wouldn’t work.
I’ll try to get a video or an action shot to show you all just how steep the road really is. I’ve probably got 10-12 more loads to do.
As usual, the pictures don’t really show what it feels like when you’re really driving up this in 1st gear, 4wd low range.

That’s the corner you start with, coming up from the bottom. I wasn’t totally sure the truck would go up it, the first time I went down. But I have a neighbor with a TJ and a winch, and another with a sizeable 4wd John Deere.

Planting anything to stabilize the slope?

Good choice. Very few tractors are actually any good at hill climbing. Those that are worth the sort of coin that makes the prices for old and mostly worn out American diesel trucks seem positively reasonable.

Yeah, I’ve got a bunch of conservation mix seed, but I definitely need more. I’m hoping for some more regular rain because that area dries out really fast, as far as getting the seed to germinate. I’d put hay down but it would blow away haha

No kidding, I’d be looking at a minimum $10k for something well used - perhaps well cared for, too - that would be able to climb that slope, and it would have a very small bucket, and be very, very slow doing it. I’d love one for lots of OTHER reasons, but this isn’t one.

oh I almost forgot, I’m also planting a bunch of evergreen seedlings, and possibly some apple trees.

Our old ‘65 ford 3/4 ton really amazed me what it would do. I would drive it around in 2wd until it got stuck then put it into 4wd and hot rod out of anything. 3' of snow, no problem, 25% hill side, n o problem. 10' tall trees, no problem.

people underestimate how much water trees will need. My dad was a contractor, customer: why are you charging 300 for a tree I can get for $ 40.
dad: are you going to coming by every couple days to water it?

Awww I wanna drive my truck around in there! I wish my truck was done, I could be practicing driving it daily. I am a bit nervous about the unsynced downshift, I tried it for a few minutes in my friend Andy’s M37 but it’s a bit tricky.

Interesting, well, I can’t be watering 100 seedlings every couple days. A few apple trees for sure I’d check on frequently.

Ha! Yeah I’m sure this would do more than what I’ve asked of it. This hill climb is getting near its vertical climbing limit I suspect. I worry the carb won’t like the angles for long stretches, or the oil pan for that matter. I keep checking the oil, for sure.

Totally. If I had a shiny new one, I’d be a bit reluctant to drive it where I’m going with this one. But I also have no interest in having a garage queen classic truck, and this is why.

That makes sense; I’m hoping to get a bunch of Hemlock and some others in the ground soon, very soon.

ha! I’m not sure it would go up that hill in 4hi, considering how hard it’s working in 4lo. A little too much wheelspin could drop the momentum and stall it trying to get traction again, then I’m in a bad way partway up the hill trying to keep it held with the brakes while restarting it and doing the world’s sketchiest hill start (manual).
Although 1st in 4hi is about the same as 2nd in 4lo. Still, not gonna chance it...
